Types of awning for a terrace — folding-arm, drop-arm, vertical and fixed

What is the difference? Folding-arm awnings extend forward without posts — for house terraces and balconies. Drop-arm awnings with side springs give the fabric an angle and stay compact. Vertical (screen) awnings drop straight down and shade against low sun and views from the side. Fixed awnings have no mechanism — for permanent shade and a distinctive look. Why an awning — and why the fabric matters most

Protection and savings

An awning is long-term protection from sun, high temperatures, UV radiation and even rain. It creates comfortable shade on a terrace, a balcony or in the garden, and in air-conditioned buildings it reduces overheating and the cost of cooling. It is installed above windows, doors or along the full length of a terrace — on the wall or on the ceiling.

Fabric that breathes

Good awning fabric lets air through while blocking sun and rain — so the shade underneath stays pleasant rather than stuffy. The right choice of fabric protects your space and improves the look of the house, terrace or business at the same time, matched to the façade and the setting.

Materials and workmanship

Acrylic awning fabrics — Sattler, Sauleda and Docril

Every awning we build uses premium acrylic fabric from European mills. These are woven from solution-dyed acrylic fibre — resistant to fading, UV, rain and frost, and breathable at the same time, so the shade underneath stays pleasant. The same fabrics are used in marine work as nautical fabric, with heavier impregnation for greater water repellency and resistance to sea salt.

Sattler

Austrian producer of acrylic fabrics, founded in 1875. Known for exceptional colour retention and a long service life.

Sauleda

Spanish mill from near Barcelona, founded in 1897. A wide palette of designs with high resistance to sun and damp.

Docril

Spanish acrylic fabric by Citel (textile tradition since 1875). Dependable, with factory-applied Teflon treatment and excellent durability.

  • UV protection +80The maximum sun protection factor under the European UV Standard 801.
  • Water repellency (EN ISO 811)The fabric sheds water — set at an angle, rain runs off. Resistance to water penetration is measured as a water column under EN ISO 811: standard acrylic fabric reaches around 370 mm, while reinforced nautical fabric exceeds 1000 mm.
  • Factory Teflon treatmentThe mill’s Teflon coating forms an invisible barrier on the fibre — it increases water repellency, repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.
  • Anti-fungal treatmentAdditional protection against mould and micro-organisms extends the life of the fabric.
On acrylic fabric we give a warranty of up to 10 years.

The thread that carries the warranty

An awning lasts exactly as long as its seams. That is why we sew with German Amann Outdoor-Pro thread — bonded polyester, water-repellent and UV-stable, aged to the ISO 4892 standard. The seam does not powder away in the sun, so the fabric stays whole for the full warranty period.

Designs — a wide choice for every setting

over 50 designs

We carry over 50 designs of acrylic fabric — from quiet solid tones (beige, anthracite, terracotta, olive green) to the classic multi-colour stripes. The powder-coating colour of the frame is chosen separately, to match the façade and the setting.

Where it is used

Where acrylic awning fabric is used

Thanks to its UV protection, water repellency and breathability, acrylic fabric is ideal for every kind of awning and sun protection — on houses, terraces and hospitality venues.

Folding-arm awning extended over a house terrace — awnings made to measure, Luna, Novi Sad
The most requested type

Folding-arm awnings for terraces and houses

Folding-arm awnings are retractable awnings — the fabric winds onto a roller tube and extends forward without any posts. They are ideal for house terraces, balconies and entrances, with the pitch adjustable from 90° to 160° to follow the position of the sun and the shade you need.

Mechanism

Aluminium articulated arms with an integrated tension system that keeps the fabric taut for the whole life of the awning. The system is tested to the European standard UNE-EN 13561:2015, wind resistance class 1–2.

Operation

The roller tube turns through a gearbox — by hand with a crank, or by a tubular electric motor with a remote. A wind and sun sensor can be added for automatic retraction.

Installation

Straightforward installation on the wall or the ceiling, adaptable to any façade. The awning is self-supporting — a 40×40×3 mm steel profile tube is fixed to the brackets with safety bolts.

Pitch: 90°–160° Frame: aluminium + 40×40×3 mm steel tube Standard: UNE-EN 13561:2015 Fabric: acrylic, UV +80, Teflon, anti-fungal Designs: over 50

Where it is used and how it looks

A folding-arm awning has broad application — from private houses, terraces, verandas and balconies to hospitality venues, restaurants, cafés, garden terraces and shop windows. Beyond sun protection it also has an aesthetic role: matching the powder-coating colour and the fabric design to the façade produces a visual whole. The awning can also be branded — a logo on the valance or across the whole surface completes the look of the building. We provide the full service of advice, manufacture and installation, with delivery across Serbia.

Cassette awning with an aluminium cassette above a terrace — Luna, Novi Sad
The premium version

Cassette awnings — maximum protection for the fabric

A cassette awning is a folding-arm awning with an aluminium cassette into which both the fabric and the arms retract completely when the awning is closed. It is the premium choice for anyone who wants the longest fabric life and a clean, modern look even when the awning is not in use.

Longer fabric life

The closed cassette encloses the fabric and the mechanism, protecting them from rain, snow, dust and UV. The fabric stays clean and looks new for longer, so replacing it is needed less often than on a classic awning.

Clean appearance

Closed, all that is visible is an elegant aluminium cassette — no exposed fabric or arms. A discreet, modern look whose colour blends easily into the façade and the window frames.

Operation and versions

Choose a semi-cassette that protects the fabric, or a full cassette that encloses fabric and arms. Most are operated by motor with a remote, with optional wind and sun sensors. Fabric from a range of over 50 designs.

We recommend cassette awnings for premium buildings and exposed terraces, and for wider spans — the rigid housing carries and protects the whole system throughout the year. A tip from experience: the fabric should always be dry before it is retracted into the cassette, which prevents trapped moisture and preserves its appearance.

Drop-arm awnings above windows on a building façade — manufacture and installation by Luna, Novi Sad

Drop-arm awnings with side springs

When a window, a shopfront or a loggia needs shading where there is no room for a classic folding-arm awning, the answer is a drop-arm awning. The fabric is wound onto a tube in the top housing, and side arms on mechanical springs push it out and down — at an angle towards the glass. As they drop, the arms tension the fabric and hold it firmly, and you adjust the angle to the position of the sun through the day.

  • Side arms on mechanical springs The arms pivot around a fixed point and lower the fabric at an adjustable angle; the springs keep it taut and stable in wind.
  • For windows, shopfronts and loggias Ideal for upper-floor windows and openings that are hard to reach — they shade the glass while air still moves freely underneath.
  • Manual or motorised Crank drive or electric motor, as you prefer. The fabric is the same premium acrylic used on all our other awnings.
Vertical screen awning lowered along the side of a terrace — Luna, Novi Sad
Protection from sun and from view

Vertical (screen) awnings for terraces, loggias and gardens

Vertical awnings have a modern look and drop straight down, shading the space from the side. They are the ideal answer for loggias, smaller balconies and café frontages — wherever a folding-arm awning cannot shade the sides. In a very simple way you get protection from the sun and from outside views, which also gives you privacy.

Movement

It drops vertically, running in powder-coated side guides or on side cables. It can be fully vertical, or set at an angle with arms where that suits better.

Fabric

Impregnated acrylic fabric or screen fabric — perforated, creating pleasant shade with a gentle flow of air and daylight coming through. The result is a comfortable atmosphere without full blackout.

Installation

Mounted on a wall, on a ceiling or between two posts. The roller tube the fabric winds onto sits between two side brackets that fix it directly.

Movement: side guides or side cables Operation: gearbox (manual) or electric motor Fabric: acrylic or screen (perforated) Mounting: wall, ceiling or between posts Designs: over 50

Where it works best

Because of the way it protects the sides, the vertical awning is common on garden terraces and pergolas, where the sides of the space need shading, and on loggias, balconies and hospitality frontages. Like the other awnings it can be branded — which makes it a practical answer for cafés and venues that want protection and a recognisable look in one.

Semicircular fixed decorative awnings above a shop window — Luna, Novi Sad
Permanent shade and character

Fixed and decorative awnings — steel frames and wrought iron

Fixed awnings have no mechanism — the fabric is permanently tensioned over a supporting frame and stays in place all year. They combine the warmth and texture of fabric with a distinctive look for the building: permanent protection from sun and rain, a dry covered entrance, and depth and character on the façade — with nothing to retract and no seasonal adjustment.

Frame

Made to measure from steel profile tube, aluminium or, for a decorative look, wrought iron. Fixed directly to the building — to the wall, to the façade, or as a free-standing canopy.

Fabric

Impregnated acrylic fabric (UV +80, water-repellent) or PVC-coated fabric at 520–600 g/m² for larger surfaces. Choose from a range of over 50 designs, with the option of branding.

Durability

No moving parts to wear out — a long-term solution with minimal maintenance. Designed to withstand year-round exposure to sun, rain and wind, without the operational concerns of retractable systems.

Shapes we make

Flat / sloped — the classic canopy Round — a soft, curved look Semicircular — above entrances and shop windows Tunnel — a covered walkway or entrance

Where it works best

Fixed awnings are ideal wherever permanent protection and a distinctive look are wanted — above entrances, shop windows, restaurant and café terraces and boutiques, and on houses with character. A frame in wrought iron gives a traditional, elegant note that off-the-shelf systems rarely achieve, and branding the fabric turns the awning into discreet advertising for the business.

Large awning over a café garden — Luna, Novi Sad
For cafés, restaurants and gardens

Awnings for cafés, restaurants and garden terraces

For hospitality venues an awning has become an indispensable detail of every frontage, terrace and garden. It gives the building protection from sun and rain, but also decoration and an opportunity to advertise — the awning shelters your guests, improves the space and puts your brand on show at the same time.

Savings on air conditioning

In air-conditioned spaces, fitting and automating an awning can save up to 35% of electricity — less overheating means lower cooling costs.

Advertising and branding

An awning is a large, highly visible surface — a logo, the name of the venue or a message on the valance or across the whole fabric turns it into permanent advertising.

Automation

Operated manually or by electric motor with a remote. Optionally we fit a weather station with a wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically.

Depending on the building and the installation conditions you choose folding-arm, vertical or fixed awnings, from a range of over 50 designs in acrylic and PVC fabric. For every venue we propose the best technical and visual solution for the setting — and every product is covered by warranty, service and ongoing support.

Gazebo pavilion with a fabric roof in a garden — Luna, Novi Sad
From our range

Pavilions and summer houses made to measure

We build garden pavilions, gazebos and summer houses to measure — unlike the off-the-shelf folding models from mass production. Every order is matched to the location and to your requirements, which gives you a permanent, stable structure rather than a temporary one.

Frame

Built from steel profiles, aluminium, timber or wrought iron for a decorative, distinctive look. Dimensions and shape are matched to the space — without the limits of standard models.

Cover fabric

Cotton, impregnated acrylic or PVC-coated fabric. For pergolas and pavilions the stand-out choice is block-out pergola fabric — completely impermeable to sun and heat.

Where they are used

For courtyards, gardens, venues and garden terraces, and also as demountable promotional structures for trade fairs and events, with the option of branding.

Block-out fabric is a three-layer PVC fabric with a polyamide middle layer — it stops sunlight and UV radiation completely, so it is thermally insulated and does not overheat. Sitting underneath stays comfortable regardless of how strong the sun is, which makes it ideal for pergolas and pavilions in a courtyard.

How we work

From enquiry to finished awning

Every awning is made to measure, so the process is clear and holds no surprises — from the first call to installation at your building.

1

Enquiry and advice

You send the dimensions, the location and 2–3 photographs of the space — by phone or through the form. We propose the type of awning, the fabric and the operation that suit your space.

2

Measuring on site

We come out to measure for exact dimensions and to check the fixing point — wall, façade or ceiling. On that basis you get the final proposal, the price and the lead time.

3

Made to measure

We build the awning to the confirmed measurements — cutting and sewing the fabric, preparing the aluminium and steel frame, powder-coating and fitting the mechanism.

4

Professional installation

We install the awning on the wall, the façade or the ceiling and secure it with safety bolts. We install in Novi Sad, throughout Serbia and the region.

Service and repair

Service and fabric replacement — for every type of awning

Do you have an awning whose fabric has faded, or a mechanism that has given up? You do not have to buy a new one. We service and repair every type of awning — including ones we did not build — so your awning looks and works like new again, at a far smaller cost.

Fabric

  • Replacing worn fabric on awnings
  • Sewing fabric for awnings and parasols
  • A choice from over 50 designs

Mechanism and parts

  • Replacing the arms on awnings
  • Replacing the bows on awnings
  • Replacing aluminium profiles
  • Replacing the gearbox

PVC and clear foil

  • Welding PVC fabric and clear foil
  • Repairing damage to covers and tarpaulins
  • Cutting and adjusting to measure

The most common reason for service is faded or worn fabric — replacing the fabric gives the awning a new look while the frame and mechanism stay. Send us a photograph and the dimensions of your existing awning and we will propose the most economical solution.

Awning prices

What does a made-to-measure awning cost?

Because every awning is made to measure, the price is worked out per building — from the dimensions, the type of awning, the fabric and the way it is operated. That is why we do not publish a price in advance: a standard figure would be wrong for your particular space.

What the price depends on

Dimensions — width and projection Type of awning — folding-arm, vertical, fixed Fabric — design and quality Operation — manual or motorised Installation — type and location

We work to strike a balance between premium materials, a multi-year warranty and an accessible price. For an indicative quote, send the dimensions and a description of the space — we come back with a proposed solution, the price and the lead time.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about awnings

What is the difference between folding-arm, cassette, vertical and drop-arm awnings?
Folding-arm awnings have aluminium articulated arms and extend outwards at an angle — they shade from above and from the front, without side guides. Vertical (screen) awnings drop straight down in zip guides and shade against low side sun, wind and views, which makes them ideal for enclosed terraces and hospitality frontages. Cassette awnings are folding-arm awnings whose fabric and mechanism retract into an aluminium cassette, so the fabric lasts longer and the whole thing looks cleaner against the façade. Drop-arm awnings use side spring arms to push the fabric down at an angle — for windows and narrow spaces.
What materials do you use for the fabric and the frame?
We use acrylic fabrics from premium mills (Sattler, Sauleda, Docril) with UV protection and water repellency. The frames are aluminium and steel, with stainless-steel fittings and a quality powder-coated finish.
Do awnings protect against rain and wind?
Acrylic fabrics are water-repellent and shed light rain; in strong wind or a storm the awning should be retracted. For better protection from rain and wind we recommend vertical awnings or clear PVC enclosures as an addition.
What operating options are there — manual or motorised?
We offer manual operation with a crank and motorisation with a remote, together with weather sensors (wind, sun) and the option of automatic retraction.
What do folding-arm awnings for terraces cost?
The price depends on the dimensions, the choice of fabric, the type of mechanism (manual or motorised) and the way it is installed. The most accurate estimate comes once you send us the measurements and the location — we come out, measure, and prepare a quote made to measure.
Do you make awnings to measure in Novi Sad?
Yes. We make every awning to measure in our own workshop in Novi Sad. We work for customers in Novi Sad and the surrounding area, and more widely across Serbia — from manufacture to installation everything is done by us, with no middleman.
Can you build an awning for a café garden, with wind protection and branding?
Yes. For hospitality venues we make awnings and vertical screen blinds that shelter guests from sun, rain and side wind, and the fabric can be branded with the name or logo of the venue. We propose the solution according to the layout of the garden and its orientation to the sun, so the outdoor season lasts longer.
Do you install, and do you come out to measure?
Yes — before manufacture we come to your address and take precise measurements, and when the awning is ready we install it on site. For an indicative estimate you can first send the dimensions and 2–3 photographs of the space; we arrange the measuring visit after that.
How long does manufacture and installation take?
The lead time for manufacture and installation depends on the dimensions, the choice of fabric and the current season. You always get a precise lead time in the quote, after measuring — we do not promise a date before we know the exact measurements and the workshop load.
What is the warranty, and do you provide service?
We provide a warranty in line with the specification: fabric up to 10 years, frame up to 5 years, electric motor 2 years. We also provide service and maintenance as needed, including replacement of fabric and parts.
How are awnings and fabrics maintained?
Clean them with a soft brush and a mild detergent in cold water — no chlorine and no pressure washing. We recommend that the fabric is dry before it is retracted, and that a preventive check is done before winter.
How do I get a quote and place an order?
The easiest way is to contact us by phone or through the form and describe briefly what you need. We arrange the measuring, prepare a quote made to measure, and once you confirm it we start manufacture and schedule the installation.
