Systems for enclosing a terrace with clear foil — which one to choose?
Clear terrace enclosures (PVC crystal foil) close a terrace, summer house or café garden against wind, rain and cold — while the light and the view stay. The difference is in how they open: a zip is unzipped and rolled upwards (the most affordable), a roll-up winds onto a tube with a crank (fast and tidy), a motorised system works at the touch of a button (maximum comfort), and snap fasteners hold the foil fixed (for spaces that are rarely opened). Choose the system that suits your space:
Zip closing
The foil is unzipped and rolled upwards like a door. The simplest and most affordable solution.

Each clear-foil closing system solves a different problem. The table is the quickest way to compare how they work, where they belong, how they open and what they cost relative to each other.
| System | How it works | Best for | Opening | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zip (YKK)Most requested | The foil is sewn between reinforced edges with YKK zippers; a panel is unzipped and rolled upwards like a door. | House terraces, summer houses, café gardens | By hand | Most affordable |
| Roll-up | The foil sits on a galvanised tube; it winds up with a handle or crank, and side guides keep it straight as it rises. | Restaurant gardens and venues that open often | By hand (crank) | Mid-range |
| Motorised | The foil sits on a motorised tube with integrated side guides; it rises and falls at the touch of a button. | Premium terraces and high-standard hospitality venues | Electric motor (switch, remote, Wi-Fi) | Premium |
| Snap fasteners | The foil is fixed to the edges of the frame with snaps; it is unfastened point by point, from the outside. | Static spaces that are rarely opened (stores, winter gardens) | By hand (from outside) | Economical |
Clear enclosure with a zip (YKK)
Closing with a zip is the most common and most economical method. The clear enclosure is sewn to measure between reinforced edges, with vertical YKK zippers on both sides. A panel is simply unzipped and rolled upwards like a door, so you can open a passage or air out the terrace, garden or summer house whenever you need to.
How it works
YKK zippers run vertically on both sides of every panel. The foil is unzipped and rolled upwards, and integrated straps at the top hold it in place while it is rolled up.
Installation
The top of the foil is screwed directly into the existing frame of the terrace or summer house, and at the sides into the vertical posts. Everywhere it is screwed, the foil is reinforced with Mehler coated fabric.
Made to your measurements
The most practical system for manufacture from supplied measurements: we make the foil to your dimensions, pack everything needed for installation and send it to your address — you install it yourself. All we need is photographs and the dimensions of each opening.
Where it works best
The zip system is ideal for house terraces, café gardens, floating venues and summer houses — anywhere daily automation is not needed and simple manual operation is enough. Its main advantages are an affordable price, straightforward installation and easy maintenance. It is also the system we supply for self-installation, anywhere in Serbia.
Roll-up enclosures for terraces and café gardens
Roll-up terrace enclosures let the foil be wound up quickly into a roll on a tube fixed at the top. The foil is mounted on a galvanised tube turned by a handle or crank, and side guides keep it straight as it rises and falls. They are ideal for restaurant gardens and venues that open and close often.
How it works
The foil is fixed to a galvanised tube turned by a handle or a mechanical crank. When it is raised, it stays neatly rolled at the top.
Side guides
Side guides are fitted at each edge to lead the foil as it rises and falls, so it always runs straight and winds evenly — no foil pulled crooked.
Advantages
Faster than a zip or snaps, it takes no effort and looks sophisticated. The right choice when the space is opened and closed several times a day and appearance matters.
Where it works best
The roll-up system is the right choice for restaurant gardens, cafés and summer houses that open often — when the space has to be opened or closed quickly and without effort. Compared with zips and snaps it is faster to operate, and the rolled foil stays tidy and discreet. The system is made to measure and installed in Novi Sad, throughout Serbia and the region.
Motorised terrace enclosure with an electric motor
For the most demanding clients we build fully motorised systems with an electric motor and remote control. The clear enclosure is mounted on a motorised tube with integrated side guides, so the foil rises and falls at the touch of a button — with no effort at all. The video alongside shows a hospitality garden enclosed with clear foil on an automatic roll-up system.
Control
The foil on a motorised tube rises and falls at the touch of a button. The system can have a wall switch, a remote control and, if you wish, Wi-Fi control from a mobile phone.
Guides
The motorised tube has integrated side guides that lead the foil as it moves, so it rises and falls evenly and effortlessly, and looks perfect doing it.
Built for outdoor use
All components are protected against moisture and made for outdoor operation. The system suits a modern look and high-standard buildings, where the space is opened and closed every day.
Where it works best
We recommend the motorised system for premium terraces and high-standard hospitality venues — restaurant, hotel and café gardens that open and close several times a day. It gives a modern look, maximum comfort and outstanding usability: the whole clear enclosure rises evenly and effortlessly at the touch of a button. It is made to measure and installed in Novi Sad, throughout Serbia and the region.
Clear enclosure with snap fasteners
Closing with snap fasteners is the classic, robust answer. The snaps — galvanised or plastic — hold the clear enclosure taut along the edges of the building. The foil is fixed by screwing into the edges of the frame, and the snaps keep it in place. The right choice for spaces that are rarely opened, because every point is unfastened by hand, from the outside.
How it works
The clear foil is fixed by screwing into the edges of the frame, and galvanised or plastic snaps hold it firmly taut. Opening it means unfastening point by point, from the outside.
Advantages
A simple and hard-wearing solution, with no moving mechanism to wear out. It is economical and dependable when the space is closed and stays closed for a longer period.
What to keep in mind
Opening is slower — each snap is released separately, and from the outside. That is why it is used less often nowadays, mainly for spaces that are not opened frequently.
Where it works best
Snaps are the right choice for static spaces that are rarely opened — stores, storerooms, winter gardens that are closed for the season and canopies that stay closed. Where the space is opened every day, a zip or a roll-up system is the better answer. We make every system to measure and install in Novi Sad, throughout Serbia and the region.
Which closing system for which space?
The choice depends above all on how often you open the space and how much convenience you want. Here is what we recommend by type of space — from a house terrace to a café garden or a floating venue:
House terrace or balcony
A space you open now and then — when it warms up, or when you want to air it out. What matters most is an affordable price and simple operation.
RecommendationA zip, or a roll-up if you want faster and tidier opening.
Café or restaurant garden
Opened and closed several times a day, often in front of guests. Speed, a tidy look and easy handling by staff are what count.
RecommendationA roll-up system, or a motorised system at the touch of a button for high-standard venues.
Summer house or weekend cottage
An open pavilion or veranda in the garden that is closed for the colder part of the year and opened occasionally during the season.
RecommendationA zip — affordable, simple, and well suited to manufacture from your own measurements.
Floating venue on the water
Exposed to wind, damp and heavier loads. It calls for reinforced construction and firm, dependable closing.
RecommendationReinforced construction with a zip or roll-up, according to the layout and use of the space.
Winter garden or store
A space that is closed and stays closed for a long period — with no need for frequent opening.
RecommendationSnap fasteners — robust and economical for spaces that are rarely opened.

Materials in a clear enclosure — Achilles, Mehler and YKK
The quality of the materials decides how long a clear enclosure lasts. Unlike cheap foils of unknown origin — which yellow quickly, go cloudy and crack in frost — we use only certified, branded materials of the highest class: Achilles crystal foil, Mehler coated fabric, YKK zippers and Serabond thread. That is how a clear enclosure stays clear, strong and dependable for years.
Achilles (Japan)
Clear crystal foil from Japan — crystal-clear, UV-stabilised (it does not yellow or go cloudy in the sun) and flexible at low temperatures, 750 microns (0.75 mm) thick.
Mehler (Germany)
Polymar PVC coated fabric at 680 g/m² for reinforcements, edges and opaque sections. Waterproof, UV-resistant and exceptionally resistant to tearing and abrasion.
YKK (Japan)
Zippers from the world leader YKK — exceptionally durable and smooth in use, resistant to corrosion and UV. Still easy to open after years of use.
- UV-stabilised foilAchilles crystal foil does not yellow or go cloudy in the sun — it stays clear for years, unlike cheap foils with no UV protection.
- WaterproofCompletely watertight — dependable protection from rain and snow across several seasons.
- Does not crack in frostIt keeps its flexibility at low temperatures — it can be rolled and folded without damage, even in winter.
- Crystal clearIt does not distort the view — you see through it almost as clearly as through glass, and daylight comes through.
The thread that holds the seams
We sew clear enclosures with German Amann Serabond thread — a bonded polyester thread for outdoor use, with a coating that stops the fibres fraying. UV-stable and moisture-resistant, so the seams stay strong and do not rot after years of sun and rain. More about it: AMANN Serabond ↗.

Made to measure
We cut the clear enclosure to the confirmed measurements — the Achilles foil is cut, the edges reinforced with Mehler fabric, YKK zippers sewn in, all with Serabond thread and double seams.
Installation on site
We install the finished enclosure at your building — or deliver it packed for you to install yourself. We install in Novi Sad, throughout Serbia and the region.
What a clear terrace enclosure costs
The most common question is what it costs to enclose a terrace — that is, the price of a made-to-measure clear enclosure. Because every enclosure is built to the dimensions of your space, there is no single price per square metre: the price depends on the size, the chosen system and the frame, so a standard figure would be wrong. Whether you are enclosing a house terrace, a summer house, a café garden or a floating venue, send the dimensions and photographs — we prepare an exact quote with no hidden costs.
What the price depends on
The price of enclosing a terrace with PVC foil depends on all of these factors, which is why we give an exact made-to-measure quote with no hidden costs. For an indicative price, send the dimensions and photographs of the space — we come back with a proposed system, the price and an agreed lead time.
Warranty and care of clear enclosures
Warranty
On a clear enclosure we give a five-year warranty — on the quality of the materials used and on the manufacture and installation themselves. For roll-up and motorised systems, the warranty on the electric motor is two years.
Within the warranty period we put right any defect (a factory fault in the material or a problem in the workmanship) at no extra cost. With proper care, a clear enclosure lasts considerably longer than the warranty period.
Care
Looking after a clear enclosure is simple, and proper care makes the system last even longer than expected:
- Clean it with a soft cloth or sponge, using lukewarm water and mild soap.
- Avoid aggressive chemicals and coarse abrasive sponges, which can scratch the foil.
- No pressure washing — it can damage the seams and the foil.
- Foil that is taken down over the summer should be dry before it is stored in a dry place.
Service and alterations
We are also here for service and repairs over time. If there is mechanical damage, or you later want to add an opening or a zip, we alter and repair clear enclosures — including ones we did not make.
